The Have Spacesuit — Will Travel educational program, which has been popular and successful with middle school and high school students, expanded to include engineering college students in Boulder, Colorado, and students at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Jonathan Clark M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor, Neurology & Space Medicine at the Center for Space Medicine at Baylor College Of Medicine, took variations of the Have Spacesuit program to the Senior Aerospace Engineering Class at the Naval Academy on April 15, 2011, and to both senior and sophomore aerospace engineering classes at the University of Colorado, Boulder, on April 21, 2011.
The students at the US Naval Academy were senior midshipman majoring in Aerospace Engineering. The professor sponsoring the lecture, Vince Pisacane, is the Heinlein Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the USNA. The emphasis of the class, and the special session, were on the physiological effects of space on the human body.
At the classes at the University of Colorado, the emphasis was on means of crew protection and how spacesuits are part of that protection. Several of the students did try on the Sokol spacesuit and were reportedly impressed with the hands-on experience.
