Have Space Suit - Will Travel Program CertificateA primary mission of the Heinlein Prize Trust is to inspire young people to become our next generation of space scientists, engineers, explorers, and space entrepreneurs.

The Heinlein Prize Trust works with World Space Week on the Heinlein Teacher Guide, a collection of science and language arts activities based on the book Have Spacesuit – Will Travel by Robert A. Heinlein™, for use in grades 5 through 9. Former NASA astronauts and scientists bring a piece of space right to the students. Following a learning activity, classes are rewarded with a Sokol pressure suit in their school. They are allowed to touch the suit and try on the gloves. Students who participated were “extremely enthusiastic” and “thrilled to have a spacesuit to play with…”

The Heinlein Prize Trust also sponsors the Heinlein Society’s very successful educational program, the Educators CD. With lesson plans based on Heinlein’s stories, over 300 CDs have been sent to teachers and librarians. By license of The Heinlein Prize Trust the CD includes complete text of three Heinlein short stories, “The Menace From Earth,” “Tenderfoot in Space,” and “The Black Pits of Luna.” In 2011 even more lesson plans were developed and written by noted Heinlein Scholar Robert James, PhD, the discoverer of the lost For Us, the Living manuscript.

Encouraging education in Robert Heinlein’s legacy, The Heinlein Prize Trust provides free access to the Heinlein Archives online to students of Professor Herb Gilliland’s classes on Heinlein at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Herb Gilliland now also heads up the Heinlein Society’s Heinlein For Heroes program.

Research grants also have been granted to the Heinlein Archives online to numerous other recognized scholars and researchers.
